So You Want to Start a Nonprofit?

At both the state and federal level, there are filing requirements, fundraising regulations, restrictions on political activity and other “rules of the road” that a nonprofit must know, especially if you are a charitable organization. Our experienced faculty will explain:

  • What nonprofit model is right for your or your client’s organization and mission
  • Key distinctions between being a “private foundation” and a “public charity”
  • How to stay compliant and avoid problems with the IRS, PA Attorney General and other regulatory agencies
  • Understand the IRS definition of “unrelated business income” and explore the financial implications for a nonprofit
  • How social media has impacted the nonprofit community

Walk through the Steps to 501(c)(3) Status

Using a step by step approach, the presenters will cover the basics of incorporating and drafting articles and bylaws and share tips on how to:

  • Weigh the benefits and burdens of being tax exempt
  • Complete IRS form 1023 to apply for federal tax exempt status
  • Fill out the form so the application process goes smoothly
  • Be clear about why a 501(c)(3) is not exempt from all taxes at the state level

Build the Best Board Possible

The key to the success of any nonprofit organization starts at the top with the board of directors. Our seasoned professionals will help you:

  • Understand board fiduciary duties
  • Consider how the size and composition of your board can be critical to the organization thriving or failing
  • Provide development and training for your board and handle possible conflicts of interest
