Critical areas for the special education lawyer, with an intro kick-off highlighting core concepts and programs!

Join PBI for a “snapshot” look at four independent areas that are essential stepping stones on the road to effectively advocating for your client.

Introduction to special education law

The perfect starting place, this session introduces you to:

  • Eligibility for services
  • FAPE & LRE
  • The IEP
  • Evaluations/reevaluations

Discipline and Behavioral Intervention

Practical and procedural issues will be explored:

  • Who is protected and why?
  • Manifest determinations
  • Functional behavioral assessments
  • Parent challenges, risk assessment, and district policy.

Top 10 Tips for Legally-Defensible Monitoring

Countdown! This panel will analyze progress monitoring:

  • What should it look like?
  • How often should it be done?
  • Is there a correct format?

The Truant Disabled Student

The complicated issues associated with truancy reflect the confluence of special education and compulsory attendance laws in Pennsylvania. Study fact patterns to determine where “things went wrong” and identify what could have been done to reengage the child in school. Also covered:

  • PA truancy laws
  • How the laws conflict with special education mandates.

Your program takeaways:

  • Excellent networking—make the most of the 15-minute break between each session: stretch your legs, refill your coffee, and shake a few hands.
  • A great way to build upon the fundamentals: You can’t practice special education law without an understanding of these four areas—why not hone your knowledge here?
  • Learn from a team: most sessions represent both the school district and family perspectives

A basic understanding of the practice area is recommended.
